Main update this month: none of the five big companies changed prices on 1 October 2026. The Suzuki Wagon R is no longer on Suzuki's price list, and Kia has not yet announced a final price for the Sportage L because it is waiting for clarity on federal sales tax.

When a new car makes sense

• You want the full factory warranty and the latest safety features.
• You will keep the car for 7–10 years.
• The car you want can be delivered without a long wait.

When a used car is the smarter buy

• You want a bigger car for the same budget. For example, a used Corolla or City for the price of a new Alto or Cultus.
• You need the car today, not after a delivery wait.
• You want to avoid the steepest part of depreciation, which happens in a new car's first years.
• The model you want has been discontinued, like the Wagon R, which is now only available used.

Extra costs to add to the car price

The price you see on a list is not the full amount you will pay. When you plan your budget, also add:

• Registration and number plate fees for a new car, or transfer fees for a used one.
• Token tax, which depends on engine size. Check it for any used car before you buy.
• Withholding tax, which is higher if you are not on the active taxpayer (filer) list.
• Insurance, which is usually a yearly percentage of the car's value.
• First service, tyres or a battery if you are buying a used car that is due for them.
