Honda City vs Toyota Yaris 2026: Which Sedan Should You Buy?

The Honda City vs Toyota Yaris question comes up again and again with Pakistani sedan buyers, and for good reason. The two cars cost about the same, both are made locally, and both are built for families who want a comfortable, reliable car that is cheap to run. Their strengths are different, though. This guide compares them on price, engine, fuel average, space, features, maintenance and resale, for both new and used buyers, so you can decide which one suits you.

Engine and performance

Toyota Yaris 1.3L1329 cc98 hp123 Nm
Toyota Yaris 1.5L1496 cc106 hp140 Nm

The difference between the entry-level cars matters most. The Yaris 1.3 makes about 10 hp more than the City 1.2. You will notice it most with a full car, the AC on, or when overtaking on the highway. In the 1.5L versions it flips: the City Aspire is the more powerful car and feels quicker on the motorway. Owners also tend to say the City has a sharper steering feel, while the Yaris is softer and easier to drive in town.

Fuel average: which is more economical?

Fuel average is usually the deciding factor. In a real-world test by PakWheels on the same Lahore routes, comparing a 2021 City 1.5 CVT with a 2024 Yaris 1.5 CVT, the results were:

DrivingHonda City 1.5 CVTToyota Yaris 1.5 CVT
City traffic11–12 km/lAbout 13 km/l
HighwayAbout 16 km/lAbout 15 km/l

In town, the Yaris returns about 1 km/l more. On the highway, the City is slightly ahead. If most of your driving is in the city, for example daily trips within Shujabad or Multan, the Yaris will save a bit of fuel. If you regularly drive on the motorway or N-5, the gap mostly disappears. Your own figures will depend on traffic, AC use, tyre pressure and how you drive.

Space and comfort

The City is the more spacious car. Its 2,600 mm wheelbase gives rear passengers more legroom, and its 510-litre boot is one of the biggest in this class. That matters for family trips, or for luggage on the way to the airport or on a weekend out of town. The Yaris boot holds 476 litres, which is still good, and the Yaris has slightly more ground clearance (175 mm vs 172 mm). That helps a little on broken roads and speed breakers.

Inside, the City looks and feels a little more premium. The Yaris cabin is simple and practical, with good all-round visibility, which many first-time sedan owners like.

Features and safety

  • Honda City Aspire: smart key with push-start, a large touchscreen and a more upmarket cabin.
  • Toyota Yaris Ativ X: push-start, touchscreen infotainment and a 7-step CVT that feels smooth in stop-and-go traffic.
  • Safety: both have front airbags, ABS and EBD in most variants. Airbag count and features differ by variant, so check the variant sheet before you buy.

Maintenance and parts

Both are easy cars to own in Pakistan. Toyota has a slight edge in maintenance reputation: almost every mechanic in South Punjab knows Toyota engines, and parts are easy to find in small cities too. Honda parts are also widely available and service costs are similar. For either car, use the correct CVT oil and change it on schedule. Most expensive CVT repairs in used cars come from neglected oil changes.

Resale value

Both cars sell quickly. The Honda City was the 3rd most searched used car on PakWheels in March 2026, with more than 25 million searches, and the 3rd most sold used car in their April 2026 report. The Yaris is newer to the market (launched in 2020), but Toyota's name keeps resale strong, especially for clean ATIV and ATIV X variants. In short, either car is easy to sell later. Condition, genuine paint and complete documents will matter more than the badge. See our guide to the best resale value cars in Pakistan.

Buying a used City or Yaris

  • Used Honda City (2012–2021): typically around Rs 18–42 lakh in 2026, depending on year, variant and condition. The older 1.3 and 1.5 models are proven and cheap to maintain.
  • Used Honda City (2021 onwards, new shape): a good choice if you want the bigger cabin and boot at less than the new price.
  • Used Toyota Yaris (2020 onwards): check the service record. On CVT models, ask when the CVT oil was last changed.
  • For either car, check pillars and door frames for accident repair and verify the registration online. Use our used car inspection checklist and the Punjab online vehicle verification guide.

Verdict: Honda City or Toyota Yaris?

Choose the Honda City if…Choose the Toyota Yaris if…
You want the biggest boot and more rear legroomYou mainly drive in the city and want the best fuel average
You want more power (1.5L Aspire) and a sportier driveYou want the strongest entry-level engine (1.3L vs 1.2L)
You like a premium-feeling cabinYou want Toyota's easy maintenance and trust
You do a lot of highway drivingYou want the lowest starting price

Our view: for a budget buyer who mostly drives in town, the Yaris 1.3 is the more sensible pick. For a family that wants space, comfort and highway power, the City 1.5 Aspire is the better car. Whichever you choose, a checked used example can save you lakhs.
